Surveillance Devices

The proliferation of inexpensive and easily available technical surveillance devices should be something that all organisations are concerned about.

Right now, any motivated individual, whom wishes to observe or listen to anyone remotely is able to pick up cheaply, with little effort, devices which can; listen to telephone calls, watch and/or listen to activity within a room when they aren’t physically present and track the location of a vehicle.

The devices that are available can pass the information they gather in real time, or store and save the information to be accessed at a later time. A simple internet search will show you a plethora of easy to install and easy to operate covert devices (many of which are concealed within everyday objects).

Some security executives we’ve met have denied that technical surveillance happens! It does! A disgruntled employee could very simply and cheaply deposit a device in an area whereby they get access to private audio visual footage.

Now, imagine what a well-financed, professional technical surveillance attacker could do! These easily available devices can be and are being used by individuals with no prior technical surveillance knowledge, but a motivated, informed technical surveillance professional can achieve more complicated and less easily detectable attacks.
Bearing all of the above in mind, organisations really should be asking themselves a number of key questions in order to establish their risk appetite.

– What damage could the leaking of private conversations do to my organisation?
– What damage could the leaking of private visual footage do to my organisation?
– Am I doing enough to mitigate the risk of this happening?
