Revealing ‘Bugged Car’ Device…
It’s not very often that we have the chance to post something that’s both useful and funny…

TSCM Find
Well, this is one of those rare instances!
‘’Names, details, dates, address and numbers have been changed to protect the guilty’’
Verrimus were contacted by a professional individual, who had been recommended to contact Verrimus by a leading high end vehicle manufacturer, to carry out a Technical Surveillance Counter Measures (TSCM) Survey of their property and vehicles as they had reason to believe they were under surveillance.
A hostile device (SEE PICTURE) was found deep planted in the client’s vehicle. The device was passive. The client informed Verrimus Operators that they had only had the vehicle for 2 weeks.
The client requested that Verrimus subject the device to a forensic investigation to try to establish the identity of the attacker.
On inspection, back at our workshop in Newcastle, Verrimus Operators managed to forensically recover the memory chip from the device.
We were a bit surprised to find date time stamped audio files going back nearly 3 months. So at first, given the fact our client had only had the car 2 weeks, we started to believe the device may be a legacy device. Non the less, we set to analysing the audio files…..
The first week or so of audio files contained background audio from what appeared to be a house. Voices could be heard quite clearly. Curiouser and curiouser…
What transpired next is one of the most fortuitous and funny this we have ever come across. In the second week’s audio files, an unknown male (UKM) could be heard asking an unknown female (UKF):
UKM “Fancy a takeaway?”
UKF “Yeah, why not. Are you going to order it?”
UKM “Yep…”
Background Noise (draws opening and closing…mobile phone DTMF tones)
UKM “Hello? Is that Domino Pizza? Hi…I’d like to order a pizza. My name? MR SMITH. My Address? Sure, 53 ACACIA AVENUE, W12 3EA. My telephone number? 0712345678. Yeah I’ll have a 12 inch pepperoni pizza and a 12 inch meat feast pizza please. How much is that? Great thanks.”
We went on to recover audio of MR SMITH planning the attack on the vehicle and briefing individuals on why he was attacking our client and what he hoped to achieve. We were able to tie in and identify a number of individuals to the attack.
SO….Mr Smith had bought the audio attack, tested it in his house but forgotten to turn it off, so he ‘accidentally’ recorded all his details, and the details of his accomplices, onto the device. Then ‘accidentally’ recorded himself instructing the individuals o
n how he wanted them to carry out the attack. Finally, the individuals that mounted the attack on our client ‘accidentally’ recorded themselves installing the attack into our client’s vehicle.
